- THE BATTLES OF LEROS - 12 and 16 November 1943
-
- A Scenario for Steel Panthers #48
-
- Installation:
-
- Copy the files SCEN048.CMT, SCEN048.TXT and SCEN048.DAT into the directory
- \STEEL\SCEN\. This will place it in the European section. If you
- have already created a new scenario with this number, or have DL'd
- someone else's, then simply rename the files to a free number, eg SCEN0??.CMT
- and SCEN0??.DAT where ?? represents the slot number you wish to use.
-
- Players Notes:
-
- It is recommended that the human player take first the German side for
- two reasons; the Italian forces don't get too many decisions to make and
- the AI is still not aggressive enough in SP when on the offence. In my
- opinion the Germans must quickly attack the harbour of Agia Marina (on the
- eastern coast) in order to win.
- I have tinkered with the italian engineers and beefed them up a bit, most
- notably with the addition of extra morale. If you want to experiment with
- balance, the biggest changes can be made by increasing the morale of the
- remaining Italian units. The Stukas are really a tough nut to crack
- anyway.
-
- The map reproduces the isle of Leros, one of the Isles of the Italian
- "Dodecanneso", strategically important for the control of the Eastern
- Mediterraneo. The British tried to take advantage of the confusion that
- followed the Italian collapse of the 8th September, and landed on many
- isles of the Dodecanneso. The Italian division "Regina", commanded by the
- Ammiraglio Mascherpa, allowed them to establish a radio post in the harbour
- of Agia Marina.
-
- The German landed twice in Leros. They were defeated on the 12th of November
- when the fortuite presence on the isle of a plotoon of Semoventi (that the
- Italians wanted originally to send to Turkey) at the orders of Commander Re
- decided the battle. The German had air superiority and could land and
- win in a second onslought, on the 16th of November. The Italians destroyed
- 200 German planes and killed over 1500 Germans, but the "Regina" was
- slaughtered and the Italians suffered 9000 casualties.
-
- I am preparing a series of scenarios about the battles that the
- Italians fought against the Germans in the greek isles: Lero, Rodi, Corfù
- and Cefalonia. This is the second experiment, the first one is the battle
- of Cefalonia. Please e-mail me any suggestion or comments you may have.
